LESSCO Air-Vapor Barrier Box (33856 bytes)
Installation (4342 bytes)

DESCRIPTION:

Cold air infiltration/warm air exfiltration occurs through electrical boxes in exterior walls and in ceilings. This leakage creates higher heat loads and warm air exfiltration can also carry water vapor that can condense in the wall or attic cavity creating rotting action or mold growth.

The LESSCO® Air-Vapor Barrier Box, properly installed, can eliminate these leaks; creating a more energy efficient, healthier, and more comfortable home.

The new, improved LESSCO® Box has incorporated a unique "hinge" feature. In the past, certain electrical sidewall and ceiling boxes were difficult or impossible to use with the LESSCO® Box. The new, unique hinge design makes virtually all current electrical boxes compatible with the new and improved LESSCO® Box.

  1. Attach the LESSCO® Air-Vapor Barrier Box to the wall or ceiling framing member.
    1. If the nailing configuration or size of the electrical box requires, cut the top and bottom of the new, improved LESSCO® Box where indicated. This allows the hinge action to take place. Then attach the LESSCO® Box as in step one.
  2. Install standard electrical box inside of the LESSCO® Box.
NOTE: Steps #1 and #2 can be accomplished simultaneously by holding electrical box inside LESSCO® Box, then attaching electrical box to framing member.
    1. If the hinge action is being used, simply swing the outward portion of the LESSCO® Box away to provide more room to attach the electrical box.
  3. Make a small cut for wiring where indicated on the top or bottom of the LESSCO® Box. Make only one small cut for each wire. DO NOT make one large hole for 3 or 4 wires.
  4. Install wiring through the LESSCO® Box into electrical box. Complete wiring as usual.

If the hinge feature is being used, DO NOT run the wire through the opening created by the cut made for the hinge option.

  3. Cut air barrier at center of flanges of
  4. LESSCO® Box
  5. Tape the air barrier to the flanges of the LESSCO® Box with a good quality, air barrier tape.

Make sure the 3M tape is folded into the insides of the LESSCO® Box to create a long lasting airtight seal.

*3M blue 72 adhesive can also be used to seal the air/vapor barrier to the LESSCO® box, if desired.
  6. Insulate around the electrical box inside the LESSCO® Box. Your airtight installation is now complete.
